Panic Attacks: Symptoms, Causes, and Immediate Coping Strategies

A sudden racing heart, shortness of breath, a tightening chest, and an overwhelming feeling of impending doom—if you have ever experienced a panic attack, you know how terrifying it can be. Many people who experience their first panic attack rush to the emergency room, convinced they are having a heart attack.

While panic attacks are incredibly distressing, they are not physically dangerous. More importantly, they are highly treatable. If you are looking for relief, understanding the mechanics of a panic attack is the first step toward regaining control of your life.

What is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is a sudden, intense surge of fear and anxiety that peaks within minutes. It is your body's "fight or flight" response kicking into overdrive, even when there is no actual danger present.

Common symptoms include:

  • Palpitations or a pounding heart
  • Sweating, trembling, or shaking
  • Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Feeling dizzy, unsteady, or faint
  • Fear of losing control or "going crazy"
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • What Causes Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks can be triggered by specific phobias, immense stress, or major life transitions. However, they can also occur unexpectedly "out of the blue." Genetics, an overactive nervous system, and a history of trauma can all increase a person's vulnerability to panic disorder.

Immediate Coping Strategies (What to Do in the Moment)

When a panic attack hits, your brain believes you are in immediate danger. The goal is to signal to your nervous system that you are actually safe. Try these grounding techniques:

    1. **The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique:** Look around you and name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This pulls your brain out of its panic loop and back into the present moment.

    2. **Box Breathing:** Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold empty for 4 seconds. Repeat until your heart rate slows down.

    3. **Use Ice:** Hold an ice cube in your hand or splash cold water on your face. The intense physical sensation can "shock" your nervous system out of the panic state.

    Long-Term Treatment at Aqidah Healthcare

While grounding techniques help in the moment, they don't cure the root cause of panic disorder. To stop panic attacks from ruling your life, professional treatment is necessary.

At **Aqidah Healthcare Limited**, we offer comprehensive solutions. Consulting a **top psychiatrist in Panthapath, Dhaka** can help determine if short-term anti-anxiety medication is needed to stabilize your nervous system.

Additionally, we highly recommend **Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in Dhaka** with one of our expert clinical psychologists. CBT is the gold standard for treating panic disorder. It teaches you how to identify irrational fear-based thoughts, reframe them, and gradually desensitize yourself to the physical sensations of anxiety.

    Reclaim Your Peace of Mind

You don't have to live in fear of your next panic attack. Get expert help at our state-of-the-art clinic or through our **online psychological counseling in Bangladesh**.
